QinYao: Scientific Research Story of an Undergraduate

Recently, Qin Yao, a 2011 undergraduate from the school of information and communication engineering of the Department of telecommunications of our university, was admitted to the International Conference on computer vision and pattern recognition (CVPR) for her paper "salience detection via cellular automata", which is the first time that our university has been admitted to the Conference for undergraduate research results so far. Behind the outstanding achievements are Qin Yao and his team's unremitting efforts, the perseverance of "painstaking people, the sky never fails", and the youth practice of striving for progress, realism and innovation.

The International Conference on computer vision and pattern recognition is an Annual IEEE academic conference. The main content of the conference is computer vision and pattern recognition technology. Computer vision is a new subject that uses computer to simulate the ability of human visual mechanism to obtain and process information. It is a challenging and important research field in the field of engineering and science. Qin Yao achieved the breakthrough that the University's undergraduate research achievements were recruited by the conference.

The main research content of Qin Yao's paper is image saliency analysis in the field of computer vision, that is, for an image, analyze the target seen at the first sight, and accurately detect the boundary of the target, so as to extract it completely.

"This is a pre-processing for image segmentation, target recognition, etc. the visual saliency information of an image can reflect the stimulation of different regions in the image to the human visual system, and the image saliency region detection technology can extract the image saliency information. Reliable and fast saliency detection can provide valuable reference information for content aware image editing, image segmentation, image retrieval and other applications, and can alleviate the image content The gap between understanding and the underlying features of the image makes higher-level image understanding possible. " Qin Yao said that the in-depth study of saliency detection technology has far-reaching significance for improving the performance of image analysis and image understanding systems and improving the application level of image processing technology.

As an undergraduate student, Qin Yao has made such achievements in scientific research. She said she would like to thank the digital simulation research team that the university entered at the beginning. "When I was a freshman, I learned by chance that the innovation experiment college has many innovation practice classes, and my mathematics and English are good, so I chose the modeling I am most interested in." Qin Yao said that many people feel that scientific research is far away from themselves, but scientific research is far from as difficult as everyone imagined. As long as we do it conscientiously and sum up our experience, the door to scientific research will slowly open.

Qin Yao recalled that when freshmen entered the innovation practice class, teachers would teach some basic scientific research skills in class and exercise students' scientific research thinking by assigning homework. In the second year, they will start to participate in the competition, usually a team of three, complete a project within threeorfour days, and submit it in the form of papers. "Participating in the competition is a good way to exercise. Only by communicating with the teachers according to the feedback of the competition results can we know our own shortcomings and where we need to improve." In addition to participating in the competition, Qin Yao will also do some scientific research projects with her teachers. In this continuous exercise, Qin Yao's enthusiasm for scientific research is growing.

When she first came into contact with digital simulation, she was confused and got the help of her teacher. Hemingfeng and panqiuhui have carefully taught basic things such as literature retrieval, literature translation and MATLAB programming. Through continuous training in various digital simulation competitions, they have become more and more thoughtful and insightful about scientific research; Luhuchuan, a professional tutor, has been guiding her research and papers with strict requirements and high standards, encouraging her to move forward better rather than indulge in her own achievements.

Because digital modeling has laid a good foundation for herself, and there are teachers to carry out research, Qin Yao gradually has a solid foundation in scientific research and is more smooth in doing professional project scientific research.

What will be the result of fusing the knowledge of cellular automata commonly used in digital simulation with the knowledge of image saliency in this major? When Qin Yao told her idea to the senior students in the laboratory, she was given a cold shoulder. But the tutor thought Qin Yao's idea was very bold and supported her to carry out this research. Last summer vacation, Qin Yao returned to school in early August and spent all day in the teaching and research room with her team. It took three months to complete this paper from the beginning of programming. In the previous preparation stage, Qin Yao read dozens of English documents.

In Qin Yao's view, persistence is the key to achieving results. "For example, in the digital simulation class, every time you go to the classroom in your freshman year, there is no spare computer space. In your junior year, you will find that fewer and fewer people go." In an environment with a high degree of freedom like the University, many people will become inert and slowly give up some of the things they initially chose. "The premise of persistence is to clarify the goal, and then make every effort to achieve the goal." Qin Yao said that going abroad is her goal, and in order to apply for a better school, she must do a good job in this paper.

For Qin Yao, the birth of the thesis is full of twists and turns. "I wanted to submit my research results to a magazine, hoping to publish a paper to help me apply for going abroad. In mid September last year, the research work was still in the exploratory stage, but I had to put the research on hold because I had to take the TOEFL test at the end of September. After taking the TOEFL test, I learned that the CVPR submission was due in November. So I wanted to do a better job in my research and hoped to be able to vote for CVPR."

From the beginning of doing digital modeling, several friends fought side by side with Qin Yao. "Xuyiqun is mainly responsible for programming in the team. He is very nice and has strong ability. He will go to the Chinese Academy of Sciences to study for a doctoral degree after graduation. Tong Mengfei and I have a lot of communication outside of scientific research. They are best friends. When your partner becomes your good friend, the team will be more united. Wang he is a very careful person and works in an organized way. He can always think of unexpected aspects." In Qin Yao's opinion, the paper is the result of team cooperation, and the most important thing of team cooperation is mutual understanding.

Some people may think that it is boring to write code on the computer all day, but Qin Yao doesn't think so. "When doing things, you should not only see the disadvantages, but also find more fun in the process, such as discussing and solving problems with small partners. The process is very pleasant." Qin Yao said that many things are natural and natural, as long as we strive to move in the direction of our dreams.

In the past four years, Qin Yao has ranked first in professional performance. She has won many awards, such as the national scholarship twice, the Shangyin elite scholarship, the first prize of the national digital simulation competition, the second prize of the International Digital Simulation Competition and so on.

With excellent achievements and scientific research achievements, Qin Yao has received doctor admission notices from many universities. "In early August, I participated in the summer camp of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The first offer I received was also from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, full award and PhD." Qin Yao said that after receiving the Hong Kong Chinese admission notice, she needs to make a decision quickly. Once she agrees, she will give up the opportunity to go abroad. At that time, Qin Yao's thesis had just begun. It was very difficult for an undergraduate without a thesis to apply for a doctoral degree from a foreign university.

"At that time, I didn't know how far the paper could be. Even if I made the paper, there might be a risk that the paper would not be hired." Qin Yao was caught in a dilemma: on the one hand, there was a stable Chinese University of Hong Kong, and on the other hand, there was an unpredictable way to study abroad. However, Qin Yao, who firmly believed in going abroad, finally gave up the admission notice of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Qin Yao's hard work pays off. Qin Yao's thesis was accepted by CVPR, and she has received admission notices from many universities in the United States. "I first received the full award offer from Case Western Reserve University. At that moment, I felt like a dream." Qin Yao is glad that her original persistence has finally paid off.

In Qin Yao's opinion, going abroad is the most risky choice she made from childhood to adulthood. Qin Yao thanked Dayong for letting her really have her own dream and know the feeling of working hard for her dream. When I was young, I prepared for the worst and gambled for my dream. Even if the final result was not satisfactory, I wouldn't feel sad looking back.

"If you give up before you reach the end, you will definitely have regrets. When you are young, don't do anything you will regret later." Qin Yao believes in focusing on the present and appreciating the scenery along the way. In the near future, Qin Yao will continue her doctoral study in the computer department of the University of California San Diego. It is reasonable to believe that Qin Yao, who is hardworking and brave, will continue to struggle on the road she chooses and adheres to, and shine on the stage of life with her scientific research foundation and scientific innovation thinking.
